At the April 28 annual Volunteer Luncheon, members of the Yarn Divas received recognition for their donations to the Octopus Project, which places safe, handcrafted octopi toys in the tiny hands of newborns at the hospital in Denton. During the program at the Embassy Suites conference center, Texas Health Presbyterian President Jeff Reecer lauded the club’s contributions to the project. Four members of the Yarn Divas were in attendance to represent the club.
Additionally, the group continues to make baby blankets, lap robes, and preemie and newborn hats. Some members are making scarves that will be donated to St. Mark’s Catholic Church to be included with gifts given to the homeless at their Thanksgiving event in November.
While our members give freely of their time and talents, much of our charitable work is made possible through donations of yarn. In the past month, at least four large donations have come in to the club, which helps greatly. Any yarn or fibers that are not usable are passed on to other clubs. For obvious reasons, these projects require materials that can be washed in commercial facilities. Should you have yarn that you’re not going to use, we welcome donations at our meetings. Gift cards to Joann Fabrics, Michael’s, or Hobby Lobby would also be much appreciated!
