RRWGA Play in Member/Member Tournament

On April 16 temperatures started in the 60s and warmed up to the 70s, the perfect spring day for 88 ladies to gather at the Wildhorse Grill to hear golf pro Craig Pullen share his top 10 reasons you shouldn’t play golf. However, that was not the real reason 88 ladies flocked to the Grill, although Craig’s charisma and joke telling is certainly reason enough. No, these ladies were there to play in the annual Member/Member tournament!

The morning started with a few words from our esteemed president Sue Galinski, followed by Craig, and then to the play day chairs Staci Brown and Yvonne Callaway. Yvonne explained the game format, 666 where the devil is in the details and in the strategy, as teams of two players played six holes as Best Ball (best score of the two counts), then six holes as alternate shot (each player hits a drive, best drive selected, then players alternate shots to the hole), and then the final six holes as a two-person scramble (each player hits, the best shot is selected, and each player hits from each of the following best shot until reaching the hole).

There were four flights, with winnings paid out to four places in each flight. Teams were as follows: Flight One: Okcha Cummings and Deb Nortunen in first place, Jaynie Gornik and Linda Phillips in second place, Gale Hicks and Brenda Watson in third place, and Marlene Womack and Ann Brehm in fourth place. Flight Two: Jane Demeter and Lee Murphy in first place, Paula Myer and Lucy Lindsey in second place, Sarah Ray and Sue Clearfield in third place, and Pat Sands and Lea Ann Kirby in fourth place. Rounding out the Flight 3 winners were Robin Hanna and Tammy Gaither in first place, Jane Temperly and Kathi Ackermann in second place, Barb Arden and Peggy Puckett in third place, and Yvonne Callaway and Diana Warner in fourth place. Flight Four winners: Mary Ann Wood and Carol Rumberger in first place, Pam Kanawyer and Sherry Garvin in second place, Mary Fabian and Neva Rhead in third place, and Cathy Wentworth and Linda Higdon in fourth place.

After the round, the ladies all gathered in the Grill for lunch and libations while recapping the day well spent on the links. Lunch consisted of an Asian salad with grilled chicken, red cabbage, onion, wonton strips, peanuts, red pepper, cilantro, and mandarin oranges, which satisfied the hungry players. Many stayed to celebrate great shots or to commiserate those putts that failed to fall, knowing that there is always next year!
