On a rainy Saturday, April 19, the Pilot Knob Rotary Club and the Advanced Placement Environmental Science students of Guyer High School completed a successful lithium-ion battery collection event. The students, under the guidance of their teacher Stephanie Riley and Rotarian Mike Weaver, participated in a contest developing marketing materials, spoke at the Denton City Council, and collected the materials on April 19. A total of approximately 60 pounds of recyclable batteries were collected, helping protect our environment and contributing to reuse of rare earth elements in new batteries.
Redwood Materials, a lithium-ion battery recycler in Nevada, takes possession of the recycled materials and extracts the minerals for reuse in new devices, recovering over 95% of the critical minerals and rare earth elements from these batteries.
If you have questions regarding ongoing efforts to protect the environment, feel free to reach out to Mike Weaver, Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group, at [email protected].
The upcoming event is the May 17 Carter BloodCare Blood Drive on May 17 at the Robson Ranch clubhouse.
