Genealogy Club Rings in the New Year

Stories waiting to be told: the King siblings, 1959 (submitted by Emily Richardson)

After an extended holiday break, the Robson Ranch Genealogy Club is back in full swing, and 2026 is shaping up to be one of our most exciting years yet.

We began the new year with a lively and thought-provoking conversation with renowned genetic genealogist and nationally acclaimed speaker Kate Penny Howard. In recognition of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, Kate offered inspiration to members with practical suggestions on how to ensure our own family stories are preserved for another 250 years. In early February, members enjoyed a fascinating introduction to DNA research from genealogist and historian C.D. Bryant, followed by a workshop presented by Jim Thornhill that guided attendees through the many facets of FamilySearch, the world’s largest free genealogy website.

Looking ahead, the club will welcome Bernard Meisner on March 3. His presentation “Beyond the Big Four” will introduce the concept of a “reasonably exhaustive search” and highlight research strategies that extend beyond the Internet’s four largest and most well-known genealogy websites. On March 17, the club will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a special program presented by Club President Mickey Grames who will share experiences and research strategies from her own journey tracing her Irish roots. Then on April 7, Barbara Coakley will present “Beyond the Census,” offering helpful tips and resources for learning more about our ancestors’ occupations and daily lives.

In addition to our educational programs, the club offers hands-on support and opportunities to connect with fellow researchers. A special evening Help Session will be held on Feb. 17, with additional daytime Help Sessions on March 3 and April 13. Members of our Stirpes Study Group will meet prior to the March 9 Help Session.

Whether you are just beginning your family history journey or are an experienced researcher looking to sharpen your skills and meet others who share a similar passion, the Robson Ranch Genealogy Club welcomes everyone. Visitors are invited to attend their first session free of charge. Genealogy presentations are held at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month, while informal workshops and help sessions take place at 2 p.m. on the second Monday of the month. All meetings are held in the CATC in Room 104. Annual dues are $20 per individual or $30 per household.
