April is shaping up to be a busy month for book and poetry lovers. The Robson Ranch Friends of the Library (FOL) association is hosting two special events for the month. These activities are in addition to the many services and events available to residents throughout the year.
The April Book Talks series title will be The Frozen River. This work by Ariel Lawhon will be presented by Jane Scholz. The date is Thursday, April 9, at 2:30 p.m.
According to resource site Goodreads, The Frozen River is a “historical mystery set in 1789 Maine, inspired by the real-life diary of midwife Martha Ballard who investigates the murder of a man found in the frozen Kennebec River, uncovering a scandal involving rape and challenging the patriarchal society of her time as she seeks justice.”
Furthermore, the book “has been called ‘riveting,’ ‘clever,’ and ‘subversive’ and was a Good Morning America Book Club Pick.”
Author Ariel Lawhon is described on the Google Books site as a “critically acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of historical fiction. Her books have been translated into numerous languages.”
Presenter Jane Scholz is a former chair of the Robson Friends of the Library. She is a retired journalist and Robson Ranch resident. She has volunteered as a voter registrar, election worker, and precinct chair. She is also a world traveler, having recently returned from an extensive tour of Africa, including Ethiopia and Zanzibar.
Later in the month, readers and poetry lovers will not want to miss an opportunity to take a trip back in time with Beatnik Night, a poetry read with groovy ‘60s vibes, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on April 30. Participants are encouraged to wear black shirts and snap their fingers in appreciation with pure 1960s style. Attendees who would like to present may read an original poem or choose a poem with personal meaning. There is no charge for the event. Come prepared for a fun hour of light jazz, coffee, smooth ambiance, and poetry! Those who wish to present a poem may contact Megg Galloway at megg.galloway@yahoo.com.
If you love books, consider joining the Friends of the Library club for $10 per year. Memberships paid after May 1 are active through June of the following year, and proceeds go to buy books, puzzles, and magazines. To join, see any library volunteer or visit the website at www.rrtxfol.org.
The library is located in the Creative Arts and Technology Center (CATC) building off Ed Robson Circle. Park outside the building, enter, and have the PDK app or card ready to unlock the library door. The library is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Volunteer staff is available to help patrons Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
