Members of Voices United traveled to Texas Woman’s University (TWU) in March to view the Texas First Ladies Historic Gown Collection. The Collection was started in 1935 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Today, the collection has over 40 gowns with approximately 17 on display at any one time. The gowns in the Collection date back to the 1800s and also include gowns worn by First Ladies of the United States: Mamie Geneva Doud Eisenhower, Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Taylor Johnson, Barbara Bush, and Laura Bush.
The collection is located in the TWU Library and can be viewed during library hours. Additional information about the Texas First Ladies and their gowns can be found at the TWU website: twu.edu/gown-collection/dress-collection.
