Members of Voices United gathered for a day that blended the charm of downtown dining with the thought-provoking power of live theater. The outing, which began with brunch and culminated in a live performance of To Kill a Mockingbird, offered a perfect opportunity for friendship and reflection.
The group met at the Chestnut Tree Teahouse and Bistro, a staple in downtown Denton located just steps from the historic Square. The cozy, historic atmosphere provided the perfect setting for conversation. The women enjoyed a variety of dishes from the Chestnut Tree’s brunch menu, which is renowned for its homemade, regionally inspired recipes and the signature mimosa bar, which provided a festive start to the day.
After brunch the group walked to the historic Campus Theatre. The theatre, a cornerstone of performing arts in Denton, was hosting Theatre Denton’s production of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. The performance was a powerful reminder of the play’s enduring relevance, particularly its focus on empathy and prejudice.
A central theme that resonated deeply with the group was Atticus Finch’s lesson on perspective: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”
The live performance highlighted this message, encouraging the audience to foster understanding and compassion, even in the face of deep-seated societal prejudice. The group discussed how this lesson—to walk in another person’s skin—is just as vital today as it was in the fictional 1935 Alabama setting of the play.
The combination of a relaxed, welcoming brunch and an impactful theatrical performance made for a memorable outing and provided food for thought long after the final curtain call.
