The Robson Ranch Garden Club met on Sept. 21, at the Clubhouse. Our first meeting of the year was off to a great start with a welcome from our president, Betsy Duncan. She introduced returning officers and our new Vice President, Deb Harwell. Deb says our club is one for “eternal optimists” since we are all willing to deal with the extremes of this climate to make our yards and gardens flourish.
Our speaker for this meeting was Denton County Master Gardener Barbara Smith. Her presentation highlighted the Texas Superstar Program. This is a program developed through the Texas A and M AgriLife extension to identify and develop plants deemed able to survive in the various regions of Texas. For plants to receive this designation they must meet the following standards:
1. Attractive and Useful
2. Unique with desirable traits
3. Perform well for most gardens
4. Pest Resistant as much as possible
5. Propagate for mass production
6. “Sells itself”
Several door prizes were given including three Texas native plants and books on Texas Superstar plants.
Members are reminded to save their egg cartons and bring them to our monthly meetings. We will deliver them to Shiloh Field to help with their dispensing of produce to food pantries and kitchens in the Denton area.
Our next meeting, Oct. 19, will be a field trip for members to the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens.
