Excitement is building as the Bocce Club prepares for its Spring Leagues, marking the first outdoor season to be played on the new bocce courts. With practices already underway and court reservations seeing steady use, the transition into the spring season is off to a smooth start.
One notable change has been the implementation of the Chelsea reservation system for the bocce courts. Thanks to the work of Donna Steibel, who developed clear and easy-to-follow reservation guidelines, questions and confusion have all but disappeared. Capos across the club have praised the system for its simplicity and effectiveness, making it easier than ever for members to reserve court time.
Behind the scenes, the Scheduling Committee has also been hard at work. Scheduling efforts began in February, with the final league schedules expected to be published by March 10, keeping the season firmly on track.
To help teams adjust to the new courts and procedures, the club has scheduled a full orientation week beginning March 23. During that week, all teams will play on their regular days under full league conditions. Matches will follow standard preparation protocols, including score sheets, court measurements, and the use of new scoreboards. League commissioners will be on hand to assist teams as needed.
The orientation week is especially important this season, as the club welcomes more than 500 new players and 26 new teams. Club leadership believes the experience will provide valuable training, encourage friendly competition, and help clear up any rule misunderstandings before official league play begins.
Planning has also accounted for unpredictable spring weather. Two rainout weeks have been built into the schedule and will be managed centrally by the Scheduling Committee rather than individual team capos. Details are still being finalized with the help of experienced contributors Steve Ventura and John Humphries. Based on lessons learned last fall, makeup scheduling will follow a more structured approach this season.
Members can find a complete overview of the season timeline, including Orientation Week, designated rainout weeks, and updated calendar, on the club’s website as part of the 2026 schedule.
While the upcoming season represents a significant change for the club, leadership remains confident and forward-looking. Adjustments will be made as needed, but these changes reflect the club’s commitment to managing its rapid growth and delivering an organized, competitive, and enjoyable bocce experience for all members.
The first outdoor spring season on the new courts is ready to roll, and the energy across the club suggests it will be one to remember.
