Bocce courts at twilight
Lorraine Wilson
Texas threw some surprises at us this summer—cooler temperatures, more rain than usual, and just enough hot days with air quality warnings to keep bocce players on their toes. The heat cut some matches down to 20 minutes, and a few divisions saw games canceled altogether.
Fortunately, the impact on team standings has been minimal. That’s thanks to league statistician John Humphries who makes sure every game counts the same, no matter the conditions. If one division plays a shortened 9-point game while another plays the usual 11, John adjusts the numbers so that everything lines up. Wins, losses, and points all get balanced out, keeping the season fair for everyone.
Technology has also brought improvements to league operations. New schedules now include QR codes, which players can scan with their smartphones to instantly access their division’s schedule through LeagueLobster. With one click, players can sync the schedule to their phone’s calendar. Even better, any updates show up automatically—no more trying to remember which week the patio was closed or when times shifted. Donna Peck and John Nalon have helped many members set up the system, making it easier than ever to keep track of games.
As for the new bocce courts, progress has slowed. The original sidewalks didn’t pass inspection, so the project is back to waiting for a new concrete contractor. The replacements will require removing the old sidewalks, re-excavating, setting new forms, laying a gravel subbase, adding reinforcement, and pouring and finishing new concrete. It’s a long process, but members are hopeful that the third try will finally get it right and bring the new courts into play.
Despite shortened games, a few cancellations, and even delays with the new courts, the Robson Ranch bocce community’s excitement hasn’t slowed one bit! The beauty of bocce is that anyone can jump in and play. The game is easy to learn but still offers plenty of challenges, especially on the tricky court 1. The mix of fun, strategy, and camaraderie keeps players coming back with the same energy and enthusiasm every time.
