On Saturday, August 15, six ladies from the Robson Ranch Breast Cancer Support Group traveled to UT Southwestern Medical Center for the Joannie Hatcher Memorial Survivor Symposium. The Jim and Joannie Hatcher Charitable Trust partnered with UT Southwestern Medical Center and Kroger for breast cancer survivors to celebrate and learn about new research being conducted at UTSW. Joannie Hatcher was a very giving person and wanted survivors to be celebrated. Although Joannie lost her battle, her husband honors her wish to “make it better” for survivors. We were treated to a wonderful brunch, photos, pink hat contest and gifts. A raffle was held, with our tickets being free, for 10 purses. These purses were filled with merchandise and gift cards, the least amount was $800 and the most $1,400. Unfortunately none of our ladies won. Karen Borta of CBS Channel 11 was the mistress of ceremonies. Everyone was recognized for years of survivorship from the longest to the newest. Marie Milleage received a $50 gift card for being a 30+ year survivor! Dr. Sumeet Teotia, Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery and Director of the Breast Reconstruction Program at UTSW Medical Center, spoke on Artistry in Breast Reconstruction. Then a panel of eight doctors answered audience questions on all areas of breast cancer. It was a very enjoyable experience, and we look forward to attending next year.
