Drake Torp-Pedersen PhD
The future is a mystery that often holds our interest. If we knew the future, think of how it might guide our choices and plans today. The investor could choose the best investments with certainty. The college grad could choose the best employment option. How parents wonder with anticipation and concern what the future holds for their loved ones!
Is it possible to know the future? The Bible tells us that God knows the future. Not only does the Bible tell us that God knows the future, the Bible tells us that prophecy is important to God.
We can tell a lot about what is important to people by what they talk about. It doesn’t take long to recognize sports fans—from the team logo on their hat to their excited conversation about their team, the evidence is clear. What we talk about most is compelling proof of what is important to us.
Does the Bible talk about the future? Is prophecy an important topic in the Bible? It comes as a surprise to many that prophecy is a major theme in the Bible. One scholar did a careful analysis of the Bible and found that 27% of the verses in the Bible are prophecy! Many of those prophecies have already been fulfilled. Of some 300 prophecies about Jesus, only a little over 100 have been fulfilled. Over 200 prophecies about Christ are still in the future!
God knows the future and He has given us a tremendous wealth of information about what is still to come. What does the Bible tell us we can expect? For some 2,000 years, Christians have prayed, “Thy Kingdom come.” The Bible tells us that will happen when Jesus returns as King. What will lead up to Christ’s return? The Bible is full of detailed information of worldwide events that will precede and set the stage for the second coming of Christ.
If a wise financier would jump at the opportunity to make his/her decisions based on knowledge of the future, how should we invest our lives in light of God’s revelation of coming events?
