The Holiday Blues

Abby McIntyre

Coordinating family gatherings, getting the kids to and from their winter recitals, and finding time to search for that perfect little something for loved ones is enough to run anyone ragged at this time of the year. With everything else going on, it can seem like a daunting task to find time to decorate and transition your home to a cozy winter wonderland that fully captures the joy of the season, but it does not have to be. This can be especially challenging if the year-round color scheme of your home does not revolve around the classic holiday colors of red, green, and gold.

The past few years, interior design has been defined by the gray and greige tones that have taken center stage in color schemes. Around the holiday season, these neutral colors transitioned to the perfect backdrop for holiday displays with pops of red and green. However, as time marches on, interior design is seeing the comeback of color in the home. From light and airy spa blues to deeper, rugged navies, shades of blue have taken the design world by storm. So, how does one jazz up this soothing color for the holiday season? Fear not, friend. We’ve got a few design tips to help you easily transition those holiday blues into the festive winter wonderland of your dreams!

If your home is centered around spa blues, accenting with pops of shimmering silver and dazzling whites can brighten the room. The icy color combination will allow you to create your own whimsical winter wonderland! In contrast, if your home is centered around navy blue, adding pops of gold can dress up your space for the holidays. Mixing the jewel toned blue with gold will allow you to transform your space in to a luxurious holiday oasis.

To help achieve either of these looks, the addition of a cheerful throw to cozy up by the fireplace with can help transform the room. Trying a chunky cable knit or a furry throw in a snowy white will add texture to the room without overwhelming the space. Everyone deserves a relaxing place to curl up at the end of a long day. Having a cozy throw will allow you to do just that this holiday season. Furthermore, swapping your everyday pillows for cheerful decorative pillows can transform your room. Adding pillows with metallic beading or shimmery embroidery combined with the use of silver and gold candles or ornaments throughout the home will create cohesion in the design allowing it to flow seamlessly throughout your space.
