Elections Aren’t Over Yet!

Tim McCormick

We’ve now all seen the results—and fallout—from Super Tuesday. I can’t speak specifically about any of it, because I’m actually writing this more than a week before that election to meet the deadline for this paper. But one thing is for certain—it ain’t over yet!

Republicans are almost guaranteed a primary runoff election in the race for Congressional District 26, since there were 11 Republican candidates vying for the spot. The good news is there are now only two candidates. There may also be other races with a runoff, which will be in late May. But wait … there’s more!

Just when you thought you were done until November, it’s time for everyone to get ready for other very important, and very local, elections coming up! The positions of Mayor and two City Council positions for the City of Denton, as well as the Denton School Board elections, are all coming up! You will vote on these in early May—yes, a couple of weeks earlier than the Primary Runoff Election I just mentioned.

If you care, or want to complain, about what’s happening in the local schools (did you know some Robson folks live in Ponder ISD, while most of us live in Denton ISD?) or the city we live in (Denton for all of us), you should start searching for information on the people running for those offices so you can do your part to select who will represent us on these important boards where decisions are constantly made that affect you.

The Republican Club meets the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the clubhouse ballroom. We invite you to come to our meetings where we always have informative and interesting speakers. Frequently, as we will be doing in April, we have candidates for various offices come speak to us and answer thoughtful and pertinent questions relating to the office they seek and their positions on issues.

So, you will still be seeing signs in yards, and you still have a need to go vote. As I wrote last month, we can have a disproportionate impact with our vote, because so few people take the time to vote in municipal elections. Thankfully, most of you take your civic duty seriously, and that makes folks have to listen to us, because they know if they don’t, they will certainly hear from us in the ballot box!

Come and join us on the first Wednesday. We really do have a great time!
