Flag Retirement Is Easy as 1, 2, 3

Cherlyn Conway

It does not go unnoticed that Robson Ranch Texas is a flag-flying kind of place. It is with great pride and spirit that we fly our flags for support of our great nation and flag days at Robson Ranch.

It also does not go unnoticed that here in North Texas, the wind likes to show off its talent, which ends up being a challenge for our flags. Flag etiquette tells us we are not to fly a tattered or shredded flag, and when taken down, they are to be retired with dignity and respect.

“When the national flag is worn beyond repair, burn it thoroughly and completely on a modest, but blazing fire. This should be done in a simple manner with dignity and respect. Be sure the flag is reduced to ashes unrecognizable as a former flag.”

Tattered and torn flags can accumulate quickly here at the Ranch, which brings uncertainty as to what do I do with them now? It’s easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. Gather your flags (Texas flags as well),

2. Load in your car or golf cart and drive to 11905 Willet Way, and

3. Drop your flags in the patriotic box on the porch of 11905 Willet Way. (No notice is needed—just come any time and put in the box. The box is checked and emptied frequently.)

Being a lifetime member of the VFW, Bob Conway will take your flags to Denton Post 2205 for a proper flag burning ceremony with the Scouts.

As a flag-flying family for generations, it warms my heart with pride of all the flags flying in Robson Ranch Texas!
