You are in for an interesting afternoon discussion as Ladonna Womochel and Cindy Voliva present a comparison of the timeless Mark Twain classic and its recent reimagining by Percival Everett. On Thursday, Oct. 15 at 2:30 p.m. in the Robson library our next Friends of the Library (FOL) Book Talk will feature The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and James by Percival Everett.
If you haven’t read Huckleberry Finn’s saga since you were young, you are invited to revisit his adventures. I think you will see them in a new light as an adult. Especially mothers of sons! You will also be enlightened by Everett’s retelling of the story from Jim’s viewpoint, or James as he is called in the new version.
We encourage each of you to read or reread these books before the discussion. Even if you don’t, please feel free to join us and take part. You may leave convinced to read or reread one or both of these books at the end of the day.
Ladonna and Cindy are well-qualified to present this discussion to our community. Ladonna holds both a Master’s and PhD in American Literature with a minor in linguistics, all from Texas Tech. She also taught at Tech for nine years. In another phase she worked in the technical field writing computer documentation and in marketing and merchandising. I have to add the interesting tidbit that she bought the first IBM PC in Tarrant County. You will have to ask her for the details on that.
Cindy has a Master’s in journalism from the University of South Florida. She earned her teacher’s certification and taught fourth and sixth grades for a short time. Her next phase was in TV news. She worked in management in Tampa, Florida. Then she went on to Cheyenne, Wyoming where she was a one-woman show doing news, weather and sports all while running her own teleprompter.
Ladonna and Cindy work well together and enjoy each other’s presentation styles. This is evidenced by the fact that this is the fourth time they have presented book talks together. And it won’t be their last. You can look forward to seeing them in our library together again.
The library is located in the Creative Arts Center (CATC) building off Ed Robson Circle. To enter most times, please have the pdk app or card ready to unlock the library door. You will not need the app or card during book talks as there will be a sign in sheet. The library is open daily from the hours of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Volunteer staff is available to help patrons on Mondays to Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
