Friends of the Library: A Year of Books to Review

Dianna Lucas

Thanks so much to all the Robson residents who made donations to Friends of the Library during the holidays. Your generosity made it possible for us to purchase books that will be read and enjoyed by your friends and neighbors.

The dates and books for the book reviews for this year have been announced. We hope you will be as excited as we are in the choices that we made. We are also trying a few new things to encourage discussion and conviviality. Some presenters will send out study guides and discussion questions before the event. We will also return to the RR Library in the CATC building and offer beer, wine, and snacks, at least for our first session in February. Discussions are free and open to all Robson residents. However, we are asking for a small donation for those who partake of alcohol or snacks to help defray costs.

The first discussion will be on Thursday, Feb. 17. We will be discussing All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque. Presenters for this discussion will be Mike Hall and LaDonna Womochel. This should be an interesting discussion of a classic that is considered the greatest anti-war novel.

On Monday, May 9, the discussion will be on The Tragedy of Pudd’nhead Wilson, by Mark Twain. We are fortunate to have Lewis Toland, a Mark Twain scholar, presenting. Tentatively scheduled to present with him is Joe Bono.

Empire of the Summer Moon, by S.C. Gwynne, will be discussed on Thursday, Sept. 15. This non-fiction book set in Texas, with the U.S. Cavalry, tells the story of a captive settler maiden and the famous Comanche war chief Quanah Parker. Jane Scholz and Greg Hemmings will present.

Our final discussion of the year will be on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The topic will be The Lincoln Highway, by Amor Towles. LaDonna Womochel, Elaine Kushmaul, and Diane van Naerrssen will present the discussion on this hot, contemporary novel.

After the discussion in February, it will be determined if future discussions will be held in the library or the clubhouse. For discussions this year, each presenter will be limited to 15 minutes. There will be three copies of each book in the Robson Library for you to check out at your convenience. They are also available on Amazon and most public libraries. Start reading now … we’ll see you at the discussions.
