From Sizzle to Swing: WLN Fall Golf Fun Is Just Ahead

Betty Davis

This year has been an exceptionally hot summer for all of us at Wildhorse Golf Course. We began experiencing triple-digit temperatures early in July. As of this writing we have endured 54 days at or above 100°F with 14 consecutive days at 103°F plus in August. It has definitely affected the number of Wildhorse Lady Niners (WLN) members wanting to get out in such punishing heat especially when our tee times were at 1 p.m. Talk about working up a sweat…whoops, I forgot…ladies don’t sweat, we “glisten.” Those of us who started at 8 a.m. tee times didn’t glisten nearly as much as those who braved heat exhaustion in the afternoon! As I am writing this it is partly cloudy with the high expected to be 93°F—a veritable cold snap in comparison.

We are eagerly anticipating our “Fairways and Friends” tournament and cooler weather on Oct. 21 to 22. Currently we have 92 players registered. The Chair of this year’s tournament is Terri Dilly. She and her committee consisting of Yvonne Callahan, Jan Lands, Jeana Stieber, Donna Leurig, and Annette Plog have worked diligently to create what is shaping up to be an excellent experience. Everyone participating must have an established handicap index. Only 11 of WLN’s 244 members have not yet achieved their handicap, which makes this the best record for handicap indexes in several seasons!

On the horizon are our overnight travel play days which will be at Squaw Valley Golf Course in Glen Rose this Nov. 9 to 10. This year’s theme is “Jewels on the Fairways.” All participants are invited to choose their favorite jewel and wear their favorite jewel-toned outfit or accessory. Get ready to have fun and sparkle Lady Niners!

The final education program for our 2026 season will be “Tee with Tyler” and will be held on Nov.11. Tyler Clark will bring his experience and knowledge to share with us in his informative and engaging manner. This is your opportunity to ask everything you ever wanted to know about golf but didn’t. Well maybe not everything since time for this program will be limited, so maybe pare those questions down to a manageable size. Registration is required, Lady Niners, so save the date and be watching for the email to sign up.

Fore! The fun is about to begin.
