As we head into summer, we are scaling back on activities to one Help Session and one presentation.
On Monday, June 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the CATC building, Room 104, there will be an afternoon Help Session where experienced members of the club will be available to assist you. Please bring your laptop or tablet and any pertinent information, as well as your questions for some one-on-one help. Members and non-members are welcome.
On Tuesday, June 20, at 7 p.m. at the CATC building, Room 104, Laura Douglas will present “Using Historical Newspapers for Family History Research.” Historical newspapers contain a wealth of genealogical information. Newspapers can provide clues to major life events or fill in missing details. Articles in the newspaper can be a daily diary of community events and can contain vital information about our families’ lives. Obituaries, marriage, and birth notices contain information and connections for genealogists and historians. News stories, social columns, illness reports, court reports, and even the classified ads are valuable sources of information for researchers. In this presentation we will learn how to locate and access historical newspapers to find more information about your ancestors using both free and subscription-based websites.
We will not have a Help Session in July.
Our July presentation will be on the 18th at 7 p.m. at the CATC building, Room 104. Our presenter will be Emily Richardson, speaking about Lineage Societies. Choosing to join a lineage society is one way to honor your ancestor, and the variety of societies has increased in recent years to include military, fraternal, religious, hereditary, ethnic, and patriotic, to name just a few. But which one (or ones) should you join? Are the applications the same to each? What are the requirements? What types of records are they looking for? All of these questions will be answered, and samples of several society applications will be examined.
The Genealogy Club welcomes all Robson Ranch residents. Annual dues are $20 per person or $30 per couple. For more information on programs or the club, please contact any club board member at [email protected].
