According to Laura Ingalls Wilder, “A good laugh overcomes more difficulties and dissipates more dark clouds than any other one thing.” The power of laughter is mighty indeed. A healthy sense of humor is necessary to help us cope, especially during the tough times in life, whether through pain, sickness, grief, loneliness, or disappointment.
With all of the heaviness we’ve encountered over the last several years, sometimes it seemed like there was no place for laughter and jokes. Yet, in challenging moments, humor can help us find a silver lining. We all need those belly laughs and knee slaps, and nothing beats taking time off with girlfriends to get in a good laugh or two.
For Girls on Wheels (Vicki Baker and Susan Hebert), now was an ideal time to tickle our funny bone, spending an evening devoted to chuckles and charity. For one night only, the Dallas Comedy Club hosted a special comedy event benefiting the Genesis Women’s Shelter. A Dallas institution since 1984, Genesis’ core mission is to empower women and their children escaping domestic violence by offering a safe place to get back on their feet.
A five-woman lineup brought to the stage an entertaining blend of live music and comedy, which unashamedly catered to the women in the audience. Sharing off-the-wall anecdotes or quipping self-deprecating jokes, we laughed at life’s most routine moments in the most unexpected places. It was a funny night of woman-power styled comedy, all while supporting a worthy cause.
It’s said laughter is the best medicine. We’ve heard that soooo many times. Seriously, humor lightens our burdens, inspires hope, connects us to others, and keeps us grounded. We all need to add a daily laughter pill (or two) to our diet. Whether we’re guffawing at a sitcom on TV or quietly snickering at a newspaper cartoon, let’s fold more giggles into our daily routine. Laughing does us good, and that’s no joke!
