The January Women’s Club Lunch was held Tuesday, January 2, 2018. Greeters gave a warm welcome which helped counteract the frigid outside air. Tables were decorated with the New Year theme in merry multi-colors. President Mary Ornberg gave a ten minute “heads up” before the meeting—allowing more time for charities, chats.
Mary opened the business meeting with a PowerPoint of her vision of the functioning of the club. A spoked wheel graphic emphasized the interrelatedness of the Board and programs with the membership. She introduced the opportunity to pay for the February lunch with PayPal via the Women’s Club website. Past Presidents were recognized, and the current Board and Committee Chairs were introduced. First time attendees, guests and January birthdays were acknowledged.
Smiles abounded as Past President Sharon Foy presented the 2017 annual charity recipient checks. Abby Germer from Our Daily Bread, and Kristie Bledsoe from Refuge For Women each received a check for $6980.75; checks were the final totals of 2017 Fundraisers Holiday Market and Holiday Home Tour.
Hospitality volunteers were thanked, pink Sunshine sheets were on each table, and additional sheets were available for suggesting names for the 2018 charity recipient(s).
The luncheon’s baked potato bar and key lime pie was a definite success as a cold winter month menu!
Program Chair Rebecca Bafford introduced Annette Becker, the Director of the Texas Fashion collection at UNT, a “library of clothes”. Many pieces in the collection were donated by Neiman Marcus from 1938-1960. The program concluded with 20th century collection highlights: a dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the final movie scene from Charade, a Rudi Gernreich topless bathing suit, screen printed paper dresses from the 1960s (a party kit in a can), and a short evening dress designed by Cristobal Balenciaga.
Annette’s lively narration as Marsha Scholze modeled a transparent replica of cage crinoline, demonstrated the difficulty of moving in social settings, getting through doorways, sitting in chairs, whether in the crinoline, or 15 petticoats!
Our next luncheon features Janine Turner, a highly acclaimed actress and nationally sought-after public speaker. She is founder and co-chair of Constituting America and will inspire us through art, movies, song, TV and social media to learn about the United States Constitution.
