On June 13 and June 20 the Robson Ranch Women’s Golf Association held its first Red/Blue Tournament, following in the format of the Solheim Cup, consisting of a two-person scramble and Foreball on Tuesday, June 13, and Alternate Shot and One-on-One Match Play on June 20. A scramble consists of each player hitting their own ball, then picking the best ball, with both players hitting from the best ball location until the ball is holed. In Alternate Shot, two golfers play as partners, but they use only one golf ball and alternate hitting the ball until holed. Fourball is a better-ball format: Two golfers play as partners, but each plays her own golf ball. The lower of the partners’ scores counts as the team’s score on each hole.
The Blue team thought they would be singing Linda Ronstadt’s “Blue Bye You” (“Blue Bayou”), but, instead, the Red team had the Blue team singing the blues. Red had a slight lead after play on Tuesday, June 13, play, then brought it home on June 20 with a resounding win of 40.5 points for Red and only 29.5 points for Blue.
The elements have plagued the tournament since its conception, with the competition canceled earlier in the year due to bad weather. On the 13th of June, despite the date, Lady Luck was smiling as the weather cooperated, even with the threat of rain. Play was delayed on June 20 for the second round of play when the Internet called it quits. Leaving captains President Cindy Sterling for the Red team and Vice President Sue Galinski for the Blue team scrambling to put the pairings together the old fashion way. Ultimately, play started and the round was completed on time.
Everyone agreed that the tournament was a resounding success and sure to be on the schedule for next year. Will it be the Red team “ready” to rumble again for the title or the Blue team jamming all the way home to Ms. Ronstadt’s iconic tune? Stay tuned until next year!
