Books, whether nonfiction, historical fiction, or novels, can provide an important window into the world of the American military. Reading about members of the armed forces and their families helps us better understand the depth of their sacrifices and the dedication with which they carry out their duties. The Friends of the Library’s May Book Talk selection was specially chosen to honor our military heroes.
Kristin Hannah’s The Women will be presented on Wednesday, May 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. by Cindy Voliva and LaDonna Womochel.
Hannah’s acclaimed novel centers on Frances “Frankie” McGrath, a sheltered, 20-year-old nursing student who boldly follows her brother’s path to Vietnam by joining the Army Nurse Corps in 1965. Detailing her time at war and the battle she faces in coming home to a changed and divided America, the book shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country have too often been forgotten.
Copies of the book may be available in the library.
