Good teachers make a difference!
Encouraged by Kate’s economic teacher in high school when assigned the project of building a business and given the tools to make it a reality, Pie By Kate was born in 2015.
Influenced by her grandmother’s baking skills—especially her killer pie crust—and recipes handed down to Kate’s dad, her success has the makings of another “Hallmark” story. Kate Amberson had always had an affinity for baking and baked with her dad at a young age—getting her hands around dough, licking icing from cakes and cookies, but also having fun with something she loved doing besides absorbing the skill.
Kate began baking for social occasions. Friends thought she’d purchased the cakes, cookies, and pies from a bakery, and when Kate confessed she’d baked them, friends and family sought after her bakery items for their parties and urged her to sell them. “My favorite part about Pie is getting to know the people ordering them and hearing why my Pie is special to them.” Kate says. “Oftentimes it reminds them of a family member or the place they grew up.”
Although Pie By Kate implies a one-woman show, her husband, parents, family, and friends have contributed so much to her success over the years. “I would not be doing this without them.”
Kate began selling pies at the Denton Community Market in Spring of 2016 and is there every Saturday. A few years later, she joined the Robson Ranch Friday Market and has loved being out here each Friday getting to know everyone and selling nine-inch whole pies and five-inch mini pies. She can also accommodate gluten-free customers by special order. Kate’s Pie can also be found by the slice at The Mug coffee truck, Metzlers BBQ, and The Juicy Pig.
“Serving Pie to Denton County is what I do and makes me happy. I look forward to doing that for years to come!”
