The weather is cooler and wetter. The days are getting shorter. The rides may be fewer, but there are still so many new and interesting places to go and see. On Oct. 15 some folks headed north to the Circle N Dairy in Gainesville, Texas. The Conleys, Bakers, and Sicos joined Steve Haugen for a fun-filled day. “Field Marshall” Dee Sico served as ride captain with “General” Marti Conley acting as sweep. The dairy is a third-generation family-owned farm in operation since 1967. Their goal is to keep their cows in the best condition possible so they will provide the best tasting raw milk. They raise the crops to feed the cows and milk the cows twice a day.
The family welcomes tour groups with advance reservations. It includes learning how the cows are fed and taken care of, the benefits of forage-based feed (silage), seeing inside the milking parlor, bottle feeding the baby calves as well as “milking” Holly–their life size simulated cow to get the experience of knowing what milking a cow is like! They also provide milk samples for all, plus a large covered picnic area if you’d like to bring lunch as well as a play area for the children.
In addition to being a great ride, it was educational. We learned that a heifer is not a cow until it has a calf. On the way back to the Ranch the riders found a great place for lunch or dinner: the Rib Crib on I35 in Gainesville, TX. They have several locations in North Texas and Oklahoma.
The board held its monthly meeting on Oct. 10 at the Wildhorse Grill. The officers reviewed what we have been involved with and planned our upcoming events. This includes an invitation for the club to participate in the Rollin’ Ranchers Car Club Car Show on Nov. 17. Other upcoming events include a dinner ride Nov. 12 and the quarterly social and club meeting Nov. 21 at the Wildhorse Grill.
We extend a big welcome to new members Robert Whipple, Dick Spivey, and Larry Rodgers. We look forward to riding with you!
We are excited about the Coats for Kids Ride (C4KR) on Nov. 24. Get a new coat to bring to the event or drop off with any club member. Our holiday party will be Dec. 5 at Chuy’s. Members are asked to get a holiday gift card for a Denton family in need, which will be distributed by the Denton ISD Social Services Coordinator. And, don’t forget the annual Progressive International Motorcycle Show at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Dallas Convention Center Jan. 3-5, 2020.
See you on the road!
