This year’s Match Play hosted by the WGA was a great success, with two beautiful days of golf! Forty-eight golfers met at the home of Co-Chair Susan Miloser on May 12 to draw up the six teams who would compete in the 15th Annual Match Play Tournament. Susan and fellow Co-Chair Gail Hicks led the selection process. Six teams of 12 golfers played in the two-day tournament on May 15 and 16. The six teams (Red, Green, Pink, Orange, Black & White, and Blue) played 18 holes on Monday, in a partner format according to their handicaps, against partners from another team. Team scores were based on how many holes were won by each of the partners, with a scramble and alternate shot formats on Monday. Tuesday golfers went head-to-head in a stroke play format.
The Black & White team came in first with a score of 21. The team members were Bob Difonzo, Johnny Eason, Mike Miloser, Dennis Stewart, Valerie Bottoms, Jaynie Gornik, Pat Sands, Diane Bent, Debbie Reed, Joy Pashby, Gabie Bull, and Chris Root. The Green team, green with envy, came in second at 20.5 points. Team members were Mark Shaffer, Greg Hajdyla, Doyle Hicks, Jim Kohnert, Brenda Watson, Becci Tomasak, Ann Brehm, Mary Burk, Joyce Marshall, Sandi Ziegler, Paula Difonzo, and Cheryl McCally. Lastly, leaving the Blue team singing the blues in third place with 18 points in a close contest, they ultimately won in a three-team playoff based on the best second-day score. Team members were Dick Sterling, Jim Orsbun, Dennis Pearson, Greg Metzler, Gale Hicks, Sue Galinski, Connie Griswold, Jan Henson, Becky Kendall, Vickie Moses, Judy Markley, and Moe Fitzgerald.
While the winners saw all other teams seeing red (especially the Red team), all the players enjoyed the competition and camaraderie. The WGA has hot plans for an even more exciting competition next year.
