The Robson Ranch Bocce Club kicked off its summer season on June 2 with the Avigliano and San Cataldo Divisions beginning play in the clubhouse, followed by the Calitri Division starting on June 8. With 24 teams and about 250 players taking part, the season features a large number of new participants and plenty of competition.
This summer marks a unique chapter for the club, as matches are being played indoors in the clubhouse ballroom. The air conditioning is a welcome change from the summer heat, but players have found new challenges on the patterned carpet and uneven flooring, which add unexpected twists to their games. Makeshift boundaries using PVC pipes wrapped in pool noodles make bank shots trickier, but many players are embracing the change and adapting their strategies. While the outdoor patio courts are missed, the indoor experience has brought a fresh perspective to the game and increased excitement among the players. Regular matches continue throughout July, with the season wrapping up on July 27, followed by playoffs on July 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. Spectators are welcome to stop by the clubhouse during matches to see Indoor Bocce in action.
Meanwhile, construction on the new bocce courts is ongoing. Progress has varied, with quick movement on some days and standstills on others. Weather has caused several setbacks, including thunderstorms, high winds, and muddy conditions that halted work for safety reasons. Delays with concrete also affected the timeline. Once the concrete work is complete, turf installation and landscaping will follow. The new grass must take root around the facility before the new courts can officially open.
However, has anyone noticed the 40 poles and are wondering what they are for? This will be a great addition. Once completed, string lights will run from pole to pole to light the courts for evening play. Plans are also underway for shade. How great is that going to be?
Behind the scenes, the Bocce Board is actively preparing for the fall season. With the new courts expected to be ready by fall, scheduling changes are being made. The 2 p.m. time slot has been eliminated, and teams from that period have been moved to 4 and 6 p.m. play times. New players and teams have added to the activity and planning required.
In addition, a committee has been updating the Simplified Rules and Guidelines, Club Policies, and the Code of Conduct. One major rule change eliminates the clock. Games will now be played to 11 points. Teams must still rotate players, with a minimum of six different players per match. Each player must play at least one full game, and no one can play more than two games per match. These updates are aimed at simplifying captain responsibilities and improving the overall playing experience.
With exciting developments underway and new energy around the club, members have much to look forward to. The upcoming debut of the new courts promises to bring even more enthusiasm and momentum to Robson Ranch Bocce.
