While the tennis courts at Robson Ranch are often filled with weekly scheduled matches, pick-up games, formal competitive matches, and valuable practices, several times a year the tennis club meets for a special Saturday morning of fun and competition. On April 6 the Spring Fling was held to crown the Queen and King of the Courts for the spring. When the play had ended, Andrew DuBose and Hunter Hawkins had claimed the most men’s wins to earn first and second place in the King’s battle. Belita Townsend claimed first for the women, with Jeanne Dearth and Dianne Ace tied for second and Jeannie winning a “lob-off” for the prize. Wildhorse Grill gift cards were awarded to first and second place winners.
Tennis Club social tournaments are a whirlwind of activity in which a rotating timed play format is used. In this format, there are 22-minute rounds of doubles where players play with a partner that round only. Each player’s number of games won is tracked individually. No-add scoring keeps things moving very quickly and competitively. After each round, the winners move to a different court and split. Losers also split and take on new partners. The player with the most game wins at the end of all rounds is the King or Queen of the Court. In total, when the four rounds were completed, the players had played a total of 127 games across all courts. Afterward, the players discussed their near misses and amazing gets over a lunch of sandwiches, chips, and cookies.
Now back to filling those courts with regular play and practice until the next tennis club event, Breakfast at Wimbledon, on June 29. Every day that weather permits you can find a combination of Robson tennis players of all ranks and skills battling hard, driving with topspin, defending the net, and chasing down those annoying lobs.
