The Italian raduno, which means get together, was at Wayne and Mary Ann Ballard’s home on Friday, September 15. The night was all about Italian food and wine. The evening began with some great appetizers including Italian nachos, meatballs and Italian sausage and crackers.
After an Italian serenade from Tom Zumann, Wayne presented the group with two wines to sample. The red wine was a Grifone Sangiovese 2015, which is made in the Puglia region of Italy. The wine is an intense red color with fruity flavors of cherry and strawberries, very balanced and light tannins. The wine is ideal with pizza and pasta dishes.
The white wine was a Grifone Pinot Grigio 2014 made with organic grapes. This wine is from selected vineyards of Sicily, which uses no pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers. The wine is straw yellow color with rich fruity aromas of apple, pear and a hint of citrus that fades into a floral bouquet. The overall consensus of the group was that both wines were very good and would be an excellent buy.
The evening ended with a great dinner of lasagna, two salads, Italian bread and two desserts, one an Italian cream cheese cake and an Italian pie. Both to die for!
So lets say, “Amici e vini Sono megliovecchi,” which translates into English “Old wine and friends improve with age!”
