Widows Are Truly Close to Our Lord’s Heart

Linda Buishas

Jesus speaks of them many times in His Holy Word. James 1:27 says, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction ….” The Widows Ministry of Women Sharing Hope wishes to carry out this admonition as they perform many different roles seeking to support the widows in the Robson Ranch community as they navigate one of the most stressful seasons in their lives.

The Widows Ministry “Encouragers” visit new widows when they hear about a loss. They help the new widow identify and connect with information about available support groups and practical and emotional resources in which they express an interest. In all cases, these volunteers offer encouragement and a compassionate, empathetic ear. During the visit, the widow is presented with a gift of the first in a series of Stephen Ministries books and a prayer shawl, knitted or crocheted by ladies who truly bless others with the work of their hands. These shawls, along with a beautiful, handmade card containing an encouraging note and scripture, are given with the hope that while wearing the shawls, widows will be reminded of God’s loving comfort and the caring prayers that went into every stitch.

Recently, the Encouragers added an additional layer to the already existing ministry areas, which will entail a more intentional process of following up on and monitoring the needs of widows after the initial visit. This will ensure that the widow continues to be supported and aware that the ministry remains there for them after the first visit.

In addition to the Encouragers ministry, the Women Sharing Hope Widows Ministry offers three opportunities for interaction with other widows in the community. First is a valuable nine-week grief support class entitled Beauty for Ashes. These classes are held in a safe environment where bonds can be formed, friendships made, and God-given tools learned to help navigate the grief process.

Second, all interested Robson Ranch widows are invited to a biannual Meet ‘n’ Greet event. These get-togethers are opportunities to meet and greet both new and old friends and an opportunity to enjoy conversations and refreshments and listen to speakers share their life experiences.

Lastly, widows are invited to join one of the Pray, Praise, and Play (PPP) groups. Women Sharing Hope currently has five PPP groups specifically made up of widows, with each group meeting once a month to enjoy an activity planned by the monthly hostess. PPPs are a wonderful opportunity for the members to enjoy making new friends, building lasting relationships and supporting and encouraging one another.

The Widow’s Ministry is one of the many ministries of Women Sharing Hope striving to follow the Christ-centered mission of building friendships, strengthening faith, and sharing God’s love. It’s the willingness of volunteers to say, “Yes!” to God’s call upon their hearts that make this ministry possible.
