Yard of the Month—A Study in Contrasts

Contrasts make an interesting landscape

Ellen Sullivan

The latest Yard of the Month belongs to David and Becky Holmes, 12512 Blue Granite Drive.

Their yard slopes to the street but they designed a series of steps for direct access to their home. Notice that the pavers covering the steps have a contrasting color to the rest of the walkway. A wise choice to prevent trips and falls.

Stone edging around the beds blends curves with straight lines. Rock filling the beds contrast from very dark volcanic stone to shades of grey rock and lighter rock with the bed areas. A fabric barrier under all the rock keeps weeds at bay.

The homeowners have a preference for plantings which will come back each year, such as cactus and other small shrubbery. But they have tall blue containers and other areas which contain annuals for variety. They hope to add more contrasting colors as time goes by.

The Robson Ranch Garden Club meets the third Monday of each month, September through May at 10:30 a.m. in the Lonestar Room of the Club House, unless otherwise noted in upcoming messages.
