July. One of the hottest months. We saddled up just after sunrise at 8 a.m. in the Robson Ranch Motorcycle Club Arena (better known as the Clubhouse parking lot). Dave Long, Marti and Mike Conley, Ron Bane, Carrylyn Jacobs, and Stan Brein tried to keep up with Ride Captain Jeff Stieber as we headed west to chase a great breakfast. The Whistle Stop Café was the ride destination this time around on July 14.
The Whistle Stop Café is a charming place with a fascinating history. Located just outside of downtown Decatur on State Highway 81, local businessman E.F. Boydston saw an opportunity in 1927 to turn what once was a feed lot into a place where he could start a lucrative business—a gas station. His business quickly grew into a complex that included a gas station covered in petrified wood, five cabins, and a café. According to local legend, the infamous outlaws Bonnie and Clyde used the motel as a hideout; located right on a major thoroughfare provided the outlaws a quick escape. Leading an organization like the Robson Ranch Motorcycle Club is complex and exhausting work. Luckily, President Mike Conley has a competent and capable team of Board Members to help with this daunting task. Fortunately two of them showed up to meet with Mike for a board meeting on July 22. We currently have 33 member families in the club. The usual scheduling of monthly breakfast, lunch or dinner rides were accomplished. They include a trip to the Main Street Pub in Gainesville in September. Angel Fire and Gunnison/Black Canyon is a go for late August. The route will cover Denton to Amarillo, to Angel Fire, Gunnison and Durango, heading back through Pagosa Springs, Chama, and Taos. Then in September we will have our annual pilgrimage to Granbury to see Footloose at the Opera House! And, it is not too early to start planning the Holiday Party (the week of Dec. 7). Thank you to the board for all they do to keep us riding!
Good wishes and thoughts to Mary and Scott Loftis as Scott is on the mend from a road bump. We are thankful that he was in his truck at the time!
