Would you know what to do if someone suddenly stopped breathing or went into cardiac arrest? In an emergency, the first few minutes can make all the difference. That’s why Robson Ranch Woodworkers are taking steps to make sure members are better prepared when seconds truly count.
On June 19, the Robson Ranch Woodworkers, in conjunction with the Robson Ranch Emergency Preparedness Club, offered an AED/CPR training class in Room 104 of the Creative Arts and Technology Center (CATC). Participants learned valuable skills that could someday help save the life of a friend, neighbor, family member—or even a fellow woodworker.
What Is an AED?
AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator, a portable medical device designed to analyze a person’s heart rhythm during cardiac arrest. When necessary, the AED can deliver an electrical shock to help restore a normal heart rhythm.
Modern AEDs are designed to guide users through the process with clear, step-by-step instructions. But knowing how to respond confidently before an emergency occurs can be invaluable. There is one AED in each building.
What About CPR?
CPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is emergency care provided when someone has stopped breathing or has no pulse. It uses chest compressions to keep blood circulating and, when appropriate, rescue breaths until professional emergency help arrives.
Proper technique is important, which is exactly why hands-on training is so valuable. Participants not only learn what to do, but also get a realistic understanding of the physical effort involved in performing CPR.
One unexpected benefit of the training is discovering your own capabilities. Some participants may find that certain steps, such as sustained chest compressions, are physically difficult for them. Knowing what you can—and cannot—do in an emergency is valuable information in itself. It allows you to better understand how you can assist as part of an emergency response.
Response to the June class was extremely positive, and another opportunity is just around the corner!
The Robson Ranch Emergency Preparedness Club in conjunction with the Woodworkers Club will hold another AED/CPR class on Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 9 to 11 a.m. in CATC Room 104. The class is limited to just 10 participants, giving attendees the opportunity for personalized, hands-on instruction.
Emergencies don’t come with advance warning. Taking just two hours to learn AED and CPR skills could someday help you make a lifesaving difference when it matters most.
The Woodshop is willing to set-up a training class similar to this.
