Voices United members met on Jan. 6 in the clubhouse. The Social Committee presented two events related to the Denton Black Film Festival for members to attend. Contact [email protected] for information.

The highlight of the meeting was our special guest, Victoria Myers, a Senior Girl Scout at the Townview Magnet School in Dallas. Victoria has chosen to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. The award project must be approved by her Girl Scout Council, which mentors her through the process of planning, executing, and completing the project.

Victoria has chosen beautification of the Champion-Macedonia Cemetery in Lewisville, Texas, as her project. This is a historical African American/slave cemetery that currently is hard to find due to overgrowth, dead trees, leaves, and unmarked graves. It lies behind an auto repair shop and has a very small sign that is difficult to see from the highway.

Victoria’s goal is to install benches, light posts, an archway, fairy lights, black wrought iron fencing, and informational markers. The estimated cost of this project is $60,000.

By speaking to various groups, she is fundraising for the project. Donations can be made by check to the following address: Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, P.O. Box 110960, Carrollton, TX 75011-0960. Please write “For Victoria Myers’ Slave Cemetery Gold Award Project” in the memo line.

Victoria said, “I would appreciate any kind of help that individuals and groups can do to help make this planning become a reality.”

A number of Voices members gave Victoria donations for her project at the meeting.

The next Voices United meeting was on Feb. 3 in the clubhouse.
