Just Good Readin’ Book Club

Robson Ranch’s “The Just Good Readin’ Book Club” will meet on July 6, the first Monday in July at 7 p.m. in the Clubhouse to discuss Jon Krakauer’s “Into Thin Air.”

The Wall Street Journal said it “Ranks among the great adventure books of all time.” The Los Angeles Times called it the “Best Nonfiction Book of the Last 30 Years.”

One moment you, a journalist, are at the summit of the greatest mountain on Earth, enjoying a lifetime dream and not realizing the murderous storm boring down on you and your team.  Shortly afterward, five members would be dead, and Krakauer would pour his soul into telling their story.

People Magazine said this is “a harrowing tale of the perils of high-altitude climbing, a story of bad luck and worse judgment and of heartbreaking heroism.”

On Monday, August 3, 7 p.m. at the Clubhouse, The Book Club will visit outer space.  “Astrophysics for People in a Hurry” by Neil deGrasse Tyson may sound like a strange title.  But the book sold more than a million copies and was on The New York Times’ bestselling list for more than one year.

This is mostly because Tyson is not only an astrophysicist, but also an excellent writer with the talent to explain complex concepts.  Said one reviewer: “This book is a brief, clear, concise overview, covering everything from the Big Bang to the evolution of the universe, the development of planets and stars, the evolution of life on earth. And, it’s wonderful!  Professor Tyson has a gift for making very complex concepts and theories comprehensible to the layperson.”

On September 14 (the second Monday to avoid Labor Day), the Book Club will discuss “Under The Tulip Tree” by Michelle Schocklee. The book has a bit of everything: The impact of the Great Depression, what slavery in the U.S. did to slaves, the revelation that slaves owned slaves and more.

A complex story with enormously interesting characters. An emotional journey full of love, empathy and faith. Said one reviewer: “I am so glad I found Under The Tulip Tree.”
