Oktoberfest takes on a different meaning for Kiwanis

Larry Varnes

The October 2 meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Robson Ranch brought forward change beyond the celebration of fall’s arrival. Kiwanis celebrated a change of leadership. Our Lt. Governor for Division 8, Fred Funk, retired old officers and installed the new board.

Taking over the presidency is Barbara Leurig who is relatively new to Robson Ranch, but no stranger to Kiwanis having been a member of a club in Rockville, MD for 10 years prior to moving to Robson. She takes over the reigns from Carol Rauhauser, a founding member of Kiwanis Club of Robson Ranch in 2007.

Lt. Governor Funk also inducted five new members into the club, a record monthly number. Kiwanis now has 59 service-minded members.

October is also a time of recognition for those who make a real difference in serving the Kiwanis Club Mission: Change the world, one child and one community at a time.

Joan Petre was named Kiwanian of the Year.

After Joan joined the club she immediately began the Kiwanis experience, serving as a board member, project chair, worker bee and all around support to anyone who needed help. We saw Joan at almost every project, event, meeting and promotion we sponsored. Just a sampling: July 4 Hot Dog Picnic, Cumberland Children’s Home, mentoring, Grandparent’s Golf Outing, Silent Auction, UNT Softball outing, Kiwanis One Day, Taste of North Texas, Texas Motor Speedway, Trauma Dolls, Source Books, Cookbooks, Garage Sale Chair, Aktion Club activities…and the list goes on.

All this makes our Kiwanian of the Year the perfect choice. The board decided to honor Joan with a Walter Zeller Award whose proceeds go toward the eradication of neo-natal tetanus around the world. Joan will be credited with saving 690 mothers and all of their future babies.

If you would like to join Kiwanis of Robson Ranch and are like-minded in a commitment to serve, stop by and introduce yourself at one of our meetings. They are held on the first and third Fridays of the month in the Bandera Room of the clubhouse, starting at 9:00 a.m. after a half hour of socializing. We’d love to have you join us. You too can make a difference
