Robson’s Hidden Gem

Peggy Puckett

There’s a well-kept secret that only a small percentage of the Robson Ranch residents have discovered. Word of mouth is about the only way folks hear about the unbelievable opportunity that is available to us almost year ‘round.

I heard about Maggie Jamison’s art classes, “Yes, You Can Draw,” when I first moved here. But I figured it was only for those people who at the very least already knew the fundamentals of art. Not true! When I saw the notice about the Beginning Drawing class I finally got up the nerve to risk what would certainly be total embarrassment. Seriously! Maggie welcomed even those of us who had no previous experience. After studying with her for six weeks, we were actually rendering drawings worthy of display in the windows of the CATC. She was a wealth of information and had taken us so far in our journey. We all excitedly signed on for another six weeks. This class was called Intermediate Drawing. She ushered us through graphite and into charcoal; we dabbled in pastels and then waded into water colors. I’m sure she was thinking that with all this exposure we would each find a medium that grabbed hold of us. She was right! Before long, eight of us had signed up for Beginning Painting with Maggie.

Half the class chose oil and the others happily settled on water color. Maggie seemed to be the only one in the room who wasn’t surprised at the end of the six weeks. She claims that she knew from day one that we would all successfully find a new pastime that we enjoyed and we would produce artwork that we were actually proud to display.

January cannot come soon enough. New friends with like interests are queuing up—brushes in-handanxiously awaiting Intermediate Painting.

Margaret (Maggie) Jamison, a successful plein air painter, moved to Robson from southern California with her husband John in 2017. She has been painting for 34 years during which time she developed her talent by studying under some of the top contemporary plein air artists in the country. Having been invited to participate in many plein air invitationals in the past, her passion since 2019 has been to witness “light-bulb” moments when a new student grasps an idea or a concept that she has generously shared. Yes! She said I could draw!
