RR Denton Drone SIG—Recreational Drone Flying at Robson Ranch Denton

Steve Simpson, Robson Ranch SIG Officer

The Drone SIG meets the fourth Monday night of each month from 7 to 8 p.m., in Room 104 at the Creative Arts Center. We have no dues, and attendance is open for anyone who is interested in drones, regardless if they own one or not.

Our Sept. 27 meeting was hosted by Steve Simpson (club officer). Steve’s meeting topic was “Recreational Drone Flying at Robson Ranch.” Steve offered an in-depth presentation on all aspects of flying a drone for personal use that included the following agenda: “How to Determine Your Purpose,” “Identifying a Budget,” “Top Three Drone Recommendations,” “FAA Basic Rules for Recreational Flying,” “Best Locations to Fly,” and “Who Can Be a Mentor?”

There was much open dialog and interactive discussion during the meeting, including questions regarding the following: “Determining a purpose versus an entry-level budget,” “How to get started in flying a personal drone,” “Best location for flying a drone,” “Are personal drone learn-to-fly services worth the cost?” “What is the maximum distance a drone can be flown?” “What are the best online sites for learning to fly a drone?” “Does the drone SIG personally assist anyone with flying a new drone?” and “How durable are drones for long-term use?”

The October general meeting session was held Oct. 25.
