Spring Brings New Discoveries to Robson Ranch Genealogy Club

“Our ancestors did not simply move
west…”

David M. Randall

After another active and informative month, the Robson Ranch Genealogy Club is continuing its strong 2026 season with a full schedule of programs designed to educate, inspire, and support family historians at every level.

On March 17, the club hosted a special Irish Day social. Club president Mickey Grames shared stories from her travels in Ireland while also offering practical guidance for researching Irish ancestors. Her presentation explored Ireland’s history, culture, and traditions, while helping members separate fact from fiction and identify organizations and websites that can support their genealogical work.

In early April, Barbara Coakley, President of the Genealogy Friends of Plano Libraries and Treasurer of the Texas State Genealogical Society, presented Beyond the Census: Uncovering the Story of Your Ancestor’s Business. Her session emphasized that an ancestor’s occupation was often more than a means of earning a living. It could also reflect identity, social standing, and daily life within the community. Attendees learned how to move beyond census records to uncover meaningful details about ancestral businesses and professions.

Looking ahead, the club will welcome courthouse research expert John Sellers on April 21. Few individuals escaped mention in court records, whether as witnesses, jurors, litigants, appointees, or petition signers, making them especially rich sources of genealogical insight. John will explain court structure, the types of records available, options for online access, and the advantages of researching in person. He will also offer advice on how to prepare for a courthouse visit.

Then, on May 5, nationally known genealogist Katy Penny Howard will present From Colonies to States: Understanding Your Ancestor’s Geographic Journey. Our ancestors did not simply move west; in many cases, the United States moved with them. Katy will show how to trace families through 250 years of territorial expansion, statehood, and boundary changes, while demonstrating why historical geography is essential for locating the right records in the right place.

The club also has two daytime workshops planned. On April 13, Emily Richardson will present An Introduction to Ancestry.com, and on May 11, David Randall will lead Source Citations Made Easy. These workshops are participatory, so attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops and research questions.

Individual help sessions with the club’s team of experienced researchers are no longer offered on a drop-in basis, but may still be scheduled by appointment. Members who wish to arrange a free genealogy consultation should contact club president Mickey Grames.

Whether you are just beginning your family history journey or are an experienced researcher looking to sharpen your skills and connect with others who share your passion, the Robson Ranch Genealogy Club welcomes everyone. First-time visitors always attend free of charge. Genealogy presentations are held at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month, while participatory workshops take place at 2 p.m. on the second Monday of the month. All meetings are held in the CATC, Room 104. Annual dues are $20 per individual or $30 per household.
