Cyndi Stampf was our hostess with the mostest for Tuesday Tasters on Tuesday, November 17. The wine for the night was Malbec. All four of the wines were from Argentina. The winner was Catena Malbec. The Catena Malbec presents a deep violet color with purple reflections. This microclimate blend of four unique vineyards offers intense aroma, soft texture and concentrated flavor. Deep aromas of ripe red and dark fruits are joined by delicate violet and lavender notes with traces of vanilla and mocha. A rich, concentrated mouth feel is highlighted by flavors of blueberries and blackberries with a touch of leather and cinnamon. The wine has well-integrated tannins, bright acidity and a flinty minerality that provides exceptional length to the finish. Diane and Chuck Miller brought this wonderful wine, and this was their first Tuesday Tasting encounter as new members.
Our second place winning wine was Alamos Malbec. A classically Argentine wine, the Alamos 2012 Malbec is blended with small portions of Syrah and Bonarda to meld deep dark cherry and blackberry flavors with hints of brown spice and vanilla. A long finish and firm tannins make this Malbec unforgettable. Bill and Joyce Marshall shared this wine with us.
Third and fourth place was shared by Darlene and Rick Lamb and Pam and Wayne Casalino. It was a Norton Reserve Malbec. Deserving of its high point ratings and acclaim, Bodega Norton Reserve Malbec is a big wine with a small price. Filled with expressive fig, currant and espresso flavors and a long finish, it’s the ideal pairing with barbecued meats.
We also had the extreme pleasure of celebrating Wayne Casalino’s birthday. I won’t tell you how many years he is celebrating, but we did put one candle in his cheesecake and sang a lovely Happy Birthday.
