Julie Glover spoke to the members of the Robson Ranch Women’s Club about Denton’s thriving commerce and entertainment areas at their June 1 luncheon. Ms. Glover spent 35 years working in and around Denton, including as the City Economic Development Program Administrator. She is currently retired and describes herself as a gardener and cat herder.

Ms. Glover took us on a tour of Denton, beginning with suggestions for places to take visiting grandchildren. She began with Three Wishes Gifts on Oak Street and then moved on to Rose Costumes, where you can rent costumes and also find places to take fun selfies. And what granddaughter wouldn’t like to dress up like a princess? Her next stop was Free Play on Hickory Street, where for one price you can play an assortment of arcade games. More Fun Comics and Games and More Fun Toys, also on Hickory Street, would be another good destination. Atomic Candy on Hickory Street can satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth with every jelly bean imaginable, over 250 kinds of soda, 192 bulk candy bins, and even international candies. She also offered suggestions for activities when the grandchildren aren’t around.

During your tour of downtown Denton, Ms. Glover said we should look out for the many murals around town. By visiting the Discover Denton website, you can find information about the Denton Mural Trail.

The Community Outreach Committee had a busy month. They assembled 415 snack packs for the Denton Community Food Center, which will be given to Denton children to help with food insecurity during the summer. For their next project, the members will fill backpacks with school supplies for elementary and middle school students in need. The goal is 120 backpacks. This project is in partnership with Friends of the Family.

The next meeting of the Women’s Club will be Monday, August 3. Dr. Angela Meyer will discuss “My Life as a Failure.” Dr. Meyer studied engineering to become a commercial airline pilot, but instead she worked for one of the world’s leading forensic engineering companies investigating “failures.” Some of the incidents she investigated include the BP Macondo explosion, NFL “Deflate Gate,” the Titanic sinking, the Simpson/Goldman murders, and the James Dean accident.

Reservations must be made by Monday, July 27, at 8 a.m. Checks can be placed in the white mailbox in the Sports Center Women’s Lounge or paid by credit card on the website at www.rrwomensclub.org. The menu will be a build your own pecan crusted chicken salad and chocolate cake. The cost of the luncheon is $21.

If you are not currently a member and would like to learn more about our club, you can attend a luncheon as a guest, and you can also find additional information at the website www.rrwomensclub.org.
