Mary Ornberg
Little did we know when a group of Robson Ranch residents met in July of 2019 to see if there was any interest in starting a drama club, that not only would there be interest, but there would also be tremendous enthusiasm! Since that first gathering, the club has continued to grow, expand, and brighten the horizons of everyone involved through each experience.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to play some memorable roles. One of my favorites was an attractive Texas girl who worked as a realtor. I loved having the long, straight hair I’ve never had in real life, wearing beautiful clothes and boots, and getting to be just a little bit sassy.
Another favorite role was a construction worker. For that part, I had to learn to burp on demand, sit with all the confidence and swagger of a guy, and chew on a toothpick. It was completely different from anything I’d ever done before, and I had a blast.
Most recently, I played a female villain cowgirl. To prepare, I learned how to crack a whip and had to channel a tough, mean, ornery personality. It was challenging, exciting, and incredibly rewarding.
What I love most about acting is connecting one-on-one with the audience. There is something magical about feeling that they understand the character, the story, and the message you’re trying to convey. When I can feel the audience with me, laughing, reacting, and sharing the moment, there’s nothing quite like it.
But beyond the performances, my favorite part of the Drama Club is the friendships. We share a love of the arts, creativity, and storytelling. We encourage one another and celebrate the many talents within our group. We are fortunate to have members who have performed professionally, acted in college productions, and brought a wealth of experience to our stage. The talent pool is truly amazing.
As I look back, I’m so thankful that the first meeting set this Drama Club on the path we’re traveling today. The future is bright, and it’s all up, up, and away from here! I can’t wait to see what exciting adventures and productions lie ahead.
Come out and support us. We need you—and you’ll be glad you did!
Drama Club meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. in Room 104 of the CATC building. Anyone interested in joining or learning more is encouraged to attend a meeting or reach out directly.
